Constant Impermanence is a meditation on the nature of minimalism, and how many parts are perpetually working to keep up the illusion of staying in the exact same place. The piece serves as a vehicle to feature two soloists, with completely improvised parts only indicating where soloists should start and stop playing. The harmonic language and rhythm section give the piece a third-stream flavor – opening the door for solos in contemporary classical or jazz styles. The ensemble consists almost entirely of minimalist material, employing lots of slowly evolving chord progressions and dense harmonic clusters that leave a lot of room for interpretive freedom and exploration in the solo parts. To that end – the ensemble parts don’t really have a melody to allow the soloists to truly take the spotlight and make each performance unique. Each soloist is given a large open solo with repeats to allow for more or less time as desired.

This piece was commissioned by Dr. Geoffrey Deibel for the 2023 Florida State University Saxophone Day, and is dedicated to Dr. Deibel and the FSU saxophone studio for their continued collaboration and support of my career.
